Age 5 to 11 Challenge Level: There is a large dip in mathematical attainment and attitudes towards maths as children move from primary to secondary school. Teachers not only have to address misconceptions but also understand why pupils may persist with errors. Last year we took part in the Bill Tutte Maths Celebration at Tattersalls, the children enjoyed learning about this local Maths legend and joining in the challenges on the day. Structured intervention support may be required for Year 7 pupils who are struggling to make progress. There are particularly strong links with Computing, Science, Geography and Art. Mastery of mathematics is something that we want pupils – all pupils – to acquire, or rather to continue acquiring throughout their school lives, and beyond.

Use manipulatives and representations. All children have access to Doodle Maths so they can practice key skills across the curriculum.

Children also get set Maths homework by their teacher that links to the work they are doing in class. This guidance is aimed primarily at subject leaders, headteachers, and other staff with responsibility for leading improvements in mathematics teaching in primary and secondary schools.
There are particularly strong links with Computing, Science, Geography and Art. Positive attitudes are important, but there is scant evidence on the most effective ways to foster them. Our approach to engaging and supporting more schools, especially those serving areas of disadvantage.

Manipulatives physical objects used to teach maths and representations such as number lines and graphs can help pupils engage with mathematical ideas.
How do you know? Select problem-solving tasks for which pupils do not have ready-made solutions. Require pupils to monitor, reflect on, and communicate their problem solving.
Place Value KS2
Quick and efficient recall of facts and procedures and the flexibility to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics. Interventions should motivate pupils — not bore them or cause them to be anxious.
Support pupils to understand how interventions are connected to whole class instruction. Sweets are given out to party-goers in a particular way.
