At Smithills we strive to improve the literacy skills of all our pupils. Students will answer one extract-based question on the Shakespearean play Macbeth. All students in KS3 will study a broad spectrum of texts designed to strengthen and embed key English skills. Students learn how to use the library, are able access a wide range of books, experience new genres and authors, and develop a love of reading. Students will develop the skills to present a variety of information for different contexts and audiences, and respond to questions and feedback. Students read one literary fiction text from the 20th or 21st century and respond to a mix of short and extended questions.

Centre for Advanced Training Workshop Read more Smithills School have been extremely lucky again to secure a professional dance training workshop with the Centre for Advanced Training, based at the Lowry, Manchester. It is essential for learning and has an effect on our ability to successfully contribute to society. The qualification smthills be assessed wholly through closed text examinations.
These assessments will be graded alongside the new GCSE Mark Scheme and accurate, relevant feedback schiol be provided to allow each student to take responsibility for their academic progression. The Hub Literacy Group provides independent learning opportunities for pupils to further develop their reading and spelling skills. The class of ’72 – ’78 had a tour of the school and we interviewed them to see how the place has changed since they were last at the school.

Year 9 students start to build upon their skills in preparation for the KS4 transition. All student’s who participated in the events enjoyed the day and would welcome it back again next year.
These clubs are run every day and provide a pleasant environment in which pupils can socialise with their friends, read, play games or use a computer to complete homework homewokr with or without support from our staff!
We are determined to build on this success, aiming for even more powerful results for the current year 11 cohort and for all future year 11s.
